✿ How I plan my brushes

Today, I wanted to focus this newsletter on the process of creating brushes: the work behind it.

✿ The idea

The most important part is having an idea of what I want to accomplish. For this one, it was to make watercolor brushes. However, that was also the idea for the last pack, so what changed? The research and trial steps.

✿ The Research

For each of my brushes, I first do some research on the drawings and techniques I like, how they behave on paper, and the final result. In this case, it was watercolor. However, during the research, I found that it would be amazing to also include a white gouache brush for drawing the white details, just like in a real watercolor illustration.

That's part of the reason why Vol.5 ended up being a Mix Media pack instead of a Watercolor one. As soon as you start getting ideas, the focus might change. But this time, I really wanted to create a cohesive watercolor pack, so including gouache, inks, pencils, and paper textures was part of the idea. Many artists combine these techniques to make their watercolors more beautiful.

✿ The Trial & Error

For example, using white gouache over watercolors. Gouache is usually 90% transparent, and when applied with a brush, depending on the pressure, you can achieve a very thin or thick line. That was the aim for this brush on Procreate.

So the first step is to duplicate a previous brush that I have made, which has some similarities to what I want to achieve, scan new textures and start changing settings.

From there, I might create between 4-5 different brushes, each of them a bit more polished and closer to the final idea. However, sometimes happy accidents happen, and while changing the brush settings, I might end up with another brush that is not what I intended, but still works great. And this time, that happened a lot :)

✿ Deciding what to keep

So this time, I ended up with over 60 brushes, which I reduced to around 20. Some of them were too similar or didn't work well in certain aspects, or maybe the style was too different from what I wanted to achieve. This part is important because I don't want to have a ton of brushes and only 3 or 4 that are decent. So I always aim for 12 good brushes, although this time I ended up with 21 :)

And all of this took me 2-3 weeks of daily work. I don't have an idea for the next pack yet, as I want to enjoy and use this one as much as I can. But if you have any suggestions, feel free to write them down ♥
